Andriy Shevchenko: Ukraine forced Turkey nothing to do, having played a perfect match
Ukraine head coach Andriy Shevchenko commented on the 2:0 win over Turkey in WC-2018 qualifying match in Kharkiv.
"Ukraine played against Turkey a year ago, when our coaching staff only started to work with national team. We did not have such a mutual understanding with the players. I respect Turkey's national team and understand how difficult it was for Mircea Lucescu to rebuild the team. We knew that we would have an advantage in the physical condition of the players, and they almost forced our rivals nothing to do on the field, having played a perfect match. Ukraine has added to the quality and tactical knowledge. I am very happy for the players, because they showed a lot desire and worked hard to win this match.
Turkey is very good team, though they have not been playing enough under the new coach. But Lucescu is a great specialist, so the team has a good future. I wish good luck to them.
We have been preparing for the match intensively. We learned Turkey’s style of play and knew their strong qualities. We did not give them space, and it was difficult for them to play under pressure. Our team looked better physically and made the right decisions
I wonder how the Icelandic mood will be according to fans’ support in the home match. We made sure of this at the European Championships in 2016. Moreover, recently Gilfi Sigurdsson has moved to Everton for £45m. This indicates the presence of a sufficient number of skilled players in Iceland. Iceland will be motivated, because it is a decisive match both for them and for us.
I hope that Garmash would be able to play in Iceland, if he gets healthy after the cold. It would be wrong to force him to fly more than 6 and half hours, if he stays ill. We hope that he will recover and help us".Print version
